Aside from my usual belligerence, I'd like to run a poll.

What JP textbook to most people use? I rep team Genki, a 2 book series which I am quite fond of. Here at Ritsumeikan, other classes use Tobira, which I hear is good, but does things in a much different order. What do you use, and what are your feelings on it?

I've mainly used a lot of really old textbooks in ebook format.

My favourite is probably: "Handbook of Modern Japanese Grammar" by Yoko McClain, printed in 1981.

You can obtain non-copyright or out-of-copyright material on the Internet Archive for free. Stuff like this, "A Japanese Grammar" from 1876:

The main physical textbook I've used (and slightly newer) is "Japanese For Beginners" by Gakken. I don't know how I recieved this book, but it was purchased and signed by someone in Tokyo in 1986. So I like how the book is the same age as me and from Japan, but it is also a neat little book that explains stuff quick and to the point. ^^

I'm also team Genki. On Genki II right now actually

Oh and what are my feelings on it lol didn't read the whole thing
I think it's very helpful and thorough. I like the little sections throughout the textbook that are like mini culture lessons called "Expression Notes". They talk about things like differences in pronunciation by natives, or connotations with certain words. Those are pretty cool. So yeah its a great book

My college uses Genki but honestly I prefer the Japanese in Mangaland series. It's a bit more engaging. If have to pick a team between Genki, Minna and Tobira I'ld say I wish my college used Tobira it's a lot more engaging ( from the little I've read from the e book.)
