To apply for a job in Japan you will often be asked to fill out an entry sheet, and only later submit your resume.

Simply put, an entry sheet (short ES) is an “application form” and resembles a cover letter in contents and purpose.
Often new graduates will be asked to fill one out when applying online or when participating at a company seminar. You fill in your basic personal information, and a little about you and why you want to join a specific company.

The company will use that information to get to know a little about the candidates and to be able to contact them again.

Only once the actual hiring process starts candidates are asked to bring their proper resume, often to their first interview.
