Japanese Adjectives -
In case people do not look in Eronzih post below. Copied and pasted here:

~na adjectives are usually made of 2 kanji. Whereas -i adjectives are usually made of one kanji plus at least one hiragana and ends in a hiragana i.
Might be useful to know, but relies on you knowing the kanji...

奇麗  - きれい - kirei - beautiful.
綺麗 - きれい - kirei - beautiful.

There are two types of adjectives in Japanese: i-adjectives and na-adjectives. I-adjectives all end in "~ i," though they never end in "~ ei" (e.g. "kirei" is not an i-adjective.)

Examples:
~i adjective:
atarashii 新しい new
furui 古い old
atsui 暑い hot
samui 寒い cold
oishii おいしい delicious mazui まずい bad tasting
ookii 大きい big
chiisai 小さい small
takai 高い tall, expensive hikui低い low
yasui 安い cheap
etc etc

~na adjective:
ijiwaruna 意地悪な mean shinsetsuna 親切な kind
kiraina 嫌いな distasteful sukina 好きな favorite
shizukana 静かな quiet
nigiyakana にぎやかな lively (place)
benrina 便利な convenient fubenna 不便なinconvenient
kireina きれいな pretty
genkina 元気な healthy, well
jouzuna 上手な skillful
yuumeina 有名なfamous
etc etc

You conjugate ~i and ~na adjectives differently.

Modifying Nouns:
~1 adj -
chiisai inu 小さい犬 small dog
takai tokei 高い時計 expensive watch

Na-Adjectives -
yuumeina gaka 有名な画家 famous painter
sukina eiga 好きな映画 favorite movie

I-Adjectives as Predicates:
(so much simpler than verbs!)
Informal:
1)Present Negative - Replace the final ~ i with ~ ku nai
2) Past - Replace the final ~ i with ~ katta
3) Past Negative - Replace the final ~ i with ~ ku nakatta

Eg. 1) takaku nai 高くない
2) takakatta 高かった
3) takaku nakatta 高くなかった

Formal:
Add ~desu to all of the above informal forms.
There is also a variation in the formal negative forms.
* Negative: Replace ~i with ~ku arimasen
* Past Negative: Add ~ deshita to ~ku arimasen

ii いい good - the only ~i adj which is irregular, changes to yoi よい for all but present tense.

Na-Adjectives as Predicates:
They are called na-adjectives because "~ na" marks this group of adjectives when directly modifying noun (e.g. yuumeina gaka). Unlike i-adjectives, na-adjectives cannot be used as predicates themselves. When a na-adjective is used as a predicate, the final "na" is deleted and followed by either "~ da" or "~ desu.

Present -
yuumei da 有名だ yuumei desu
有名です

Present Negative -
yuumei dewa nai 有名ではない yuumei dewa arimasen 有名ではありません

Past -
yuumei datta 有名だった
yuumei deshita 有名でした

Past negative -
yuumei dewa nakatta 有名ではなかった
yuumei dewa arimasen deshita
有名ではありませんでした

I hope this small lesson on adjectives helps people ^^
They are much easier than verbs to learn to conjugate. Maybe a start to the grammar section?? ^_-

^-^ domo arigato gozaimasu walker san. i remember doing this in class a while ago so this was excellent revision for me.(I always remember what the class was about but none of the rules actually taught) if you don't mind I am going to copy and paste it into a word doc or something so i can use it for future reference.

Mistwalker June 13, 2011, 4:20 am

Yes it is quite nice to have revision every so often and adjectives are easier than some grammar points.

Please feel free to use it and edit as you wish. The window was a lot smaller when I typed it out like comments section so the above isn't formatted as I'd have liked in some areas. :( Edit to make it your own notes. ^^

Well... I guess you'd use tanoshikatta if you mostly refer to a past conversation, and tanoshii if you also look forward to future ones? I'm really not sure either *g* sorry! ええとさあ。すぐに私が病院から出てきました、テレベで日本映画週がありました。I was still bed bound. 私はとてものを見て楽しかった。それからRecoveringしているマンガを読みはじめました。I had to have a minor operation a year later with a 40/60 success rate (it worked) and there’s an 80% chance I’ll need surgery again in my lifetime so won’t be able to do the career I was studying for. So I thought that maybe I could do translation work in future… As i could still work even if get hospitalized/bed bound again for a long period of time. And it’s something i found that i enjoy.

Mistwalker Mistwalker April 8, 2011, 5:55 am
Evening,

Still not familiarised myself with all the features here yet so apologise if it's there and I haven't encountered it yet... Things like the kanji 山, 木 or 川 I know instantly, so is there a way to only get vocab/kanji that you aren't familiar with? rather than get ones you already know.
beeant
beeant April 8, 2011, 8:54 am

Hello,

Thank you for using JCJP, I hope that you will get familiar with JCJP soon.

For first-time use, JCJP still doesn't recognize your progress, statistics, etc. So the system does not know what question to give you, what task to give you. It can only give you the basic ToDo list to do chapter tests, practice and to gain your level.

As you start completing the tasks in your ToDo list, JCJP system will automatically build your statistics. Vocabulary statistics, Kanji statistics, note progress, etc. It will start building stats for each vocabularies and kanji.

After those statistics are built dynamically, JCJP will know what are the vocabularies that you are weak at, vocabularies that you might forget, your good vocabularies. Based on that, JCJP will be able give you recommended tasks/to do list based on those statistics (Weak List, Oblivion List will appear on your ToDo List).

I hope that you can understand my explanation.

For now, please just follow the ToDo list. See what you need to do from there. The ToDo list feature is built for you to keep up your learning progress based on your personalized statistics.

Enjoy~ :D

Ya, just take it easy. If you have any problem, or any parts that is difficult to understand, please tell me.

I am trying to make this site to be as easy as possible to understand.
Mistwalker
Mistwalker April 9, 2011, 11:34 pm

Thanks, mostly easy to use, and a great site. Glad i found it is helping me greatly learn new vocab in a fun way. Will you be expanding to include a grammar section in the lessons?
beeant
beeant April 10, 2011, 1:44 am

about grammar, ya, there are many requests about grammar. but I'm still considering how to create a system to automate grammar questions and answers.. it is really difficult seems grammar is so complex.

For now, I am planning to implement reading feature where users can learn grammar seamlessly.

So the step to use the reading section is just to read and then do quiz on the vocabularies found in the reading article. It seems like the reading system is still focusing on vocabulary, however, I believe that user can learn grammar seamlessly. Meaning, user can grasp grammatical structure while reading the article.

What do you think about this?
Mistwalker
Mistwalker April 10, 2011, 2:28 am

Ooh I like that idea of a reading section, you could have more difficult paragraphs to read the higher the level goes, or some with no furigana, or in kana only, lots of scope that you could use for that. Reading section should teach grammer as you go through, might have to put some notes in or allow for explanations if there are more complex or of irregular structure sentences so people can understand, but i really like the idea of a reading section.
beeant
beeant April 11, 2011, 12:34 am

Thank you for your opinion. I will start working on the reading section now. I'm thinking to make reading section only for level 6 users. I think it makes more sense as it requires at least some basic vocabularies and kanji to read Japanese articles.

So be level 6 ASAP :D
Mistwalker
Mistwalker April 11, 2011, 1:41 am

haha :P I'll get there soon! I'm working on memorizing the new vocabs and kanji for the time being rather than worry about my level. Thanks for all the updates and improvements on this site that you're doing.

こんばんは。I’m also prone to this mistake of putting wa at the end instead of ha. Bad habit from Romaji :( Try to avoid romaji if possible as it slows learning considerably. Konnichiha and konbanha use particle ‘ha’ as they used to be part of a sentence before turning into a greeting. Good luck with your studying ^_^ This website is v. good for picking up vocab and remembering it.

Yes it helps as you get to hear pronunciations of words, but it is better if you already know the vocab to pick it up. its not like you can learn new things really just listening - need to go looking for lyrics with translations to understand.
Depends on what music you like...
