I'd recommend practicing daily your vocab and kanji, try to immerse yourself as much as you can in the japanese culture: songs, movies, tv shows; it'll really boost your vocab, as well as listening and speaking skills. The more you listen, the faster you'll pick up words and grammar patterns. If you hear or read a word but don't know its meaning, look it up on Jisho .org. Depending on your needs, you might have to learn to write kanji, so you can buy practice exercise books on amazon; you'll also find lots of useful reviewed books there. I heard Genki is great for self-study but I've never had the oppurtunity to buy it.. Hope this helps though.
Also, most importantly : never give up !
Good luck :)
