Hi I'm fairly new here but I was thinking that there should be an option to turn off answers in katakana when practicing hiragama, and vise versa. I have yet to learn katakana so I cant answer some of the questions in the hiragama practice, and it would be the same if I were to learn katakana first.

Learning Hiragana/Katakana should not take so much time.
Please try to learn it in short time and try to move on quickly.
You can always refer to Hiragana/Katakana table while you are doing practice in JapaneseClass. By doing so, I believe that you would get used to read Hiragana/Katakana in no time =D
