Hiraga is one of japanese writing systems. It is used as particle and few words that aren't written in kanji.
Katakana is used to write foreign name and so on.
    Example: 私はインドネシア人です。
は is hiragana ( as particle)
インドネシア is katakana (a country name)
    CMIIW. :)

You should really start with a textbook like 'Minna no Nihongo' or 'Genki'
This site is great but it's not going to teach you how to use Japanese.

hiragana is used for words of japanese origin. katakana is used for words of foreign origin. Shairn has a lot of links to online resources if you dont have the money for textbooks atm.
