- I'm no expert, but I believe it's better to start with Hiragana. Most japanese media uses primarily Hiragana and Kanji, and a little Katakana. Really, the order doesn't matter, as you need both in modern japanese text, but you should start by either memorizing Hiragana, or do both at the same time. Personally, I still have a hard time with Katakana simply because I rarely read it, and I started with Hiragana. But whatever your choice, have fun!May 7, 2014 at 10:33am
- thanks a bunch :) also when you said media you included japanese manga right?May 7, 2014 at 10:38am
- I studied Katakana first before, then it was kind of useless (can only read english word written in their alphabet) because most of the reading materials are in Hiragana and Kanji., hahaha.
May 7, 2014 at 12:13pm - i studied hiragana first cause it's look so easy for me :3May 7, 2014 at 12:24pm
- Yes, manga, light novels, VNs, etc. mostly use Hiragana and Kanji. Katakana is used mostly for foreign names or terms, and is less common than the others. It's important to learn both types of Kana to be able to read.
May 7, 2014 at 1:26pm - Hiragana is easier to learn than katakana. To me, katakana just feels like kanji.May 7, 2014 at 1:33pm
- hiragana is always taught first, then kana, then kanji
May 7, 2014 at 4:07pm - Is there a manga reader online that is in Hiragana or with kanji but with furigana?May 7, 2014 at 5:32pm
- Believe me when I say you must learn hiragana and katakana right next to Believe me when I say you must learn hiragana and katakana right next to each other, and before you start "really" learning Japanese. As for kanji, wait a long, long time for those, until you've mastered the basic grammatical concepts (verbs, adjectives, progressive tenses, etc).
Hiragana and katakana are very similar. Both have the same amount of characters, there are some loan characters, many look similar, and you will be using both extremely frequently. Go with hiragana first I guess.
And most importantly, stay away from romaji. Good luck.May 8, 2014 at 6:23am
