Talk to everybody, never speak English, and carry a pocket dictionary that goes hiragana to English. Even speak Japanese to yourself. I lived there for two years and that is what I did. Good luck.

My advice is to find native Japanese speakers in your classes who is fluent in English, and take notes or audio recordings while you are with them. Also buy Japanese children's books on kanji, vocabulary, conversational Japanese and grammar, or borrow books from a 図書館 or library.
