I recommend studying kanji when you are still studying with the genki books. You don't want to postpone learning kanji too much or it will become a hassle later on. The genki books also have some kanji, but not enough. So i suggest you pick up a book especially for learning kanji. For example: remembering the kanji by Heisig.

You need to learn around 1000 kanji to be considered fluent in Japanese. Trust me, 1000 kanji is a lot, more than you realize it is. You should start kanji as soon as possible.

really its best to know at least the jouyou kanji (ie kanji learned in school) which is roughly about 2,136 and you should be able to read anything just fine. I'm at about 500ish now and I can still read a good amount but still too much I can't read.
