I like this site (just made a donation, BTW), and can appreciate all the effort spent on design / coding / maintenance / etc., but I think that the current implementation of ads is very flawed, to the point of risking its users privacy.
What impressed me the most at first when I signed in was the absence of ads - which is great, since this is a learning platform, and ads can be incredibly distracting, something that no one wants when studying... But now I see blinking images while studying, which makes me want to stop using JapaneseClass.jp ... :(
But, to add insult to injury, today, after clicking for the first time in a link here, a pop-up window opened an ad site that Chrome blocked due to phishing scam reports. I've seen other scam/phishing ads in JapaneseClass.jp before, so I would definitely recommend for the site manager to try other affiliate / ad networks, otherwise these occurrences could tarnish his/her reputation.
A more interesting way to monetize, IMHO, would be to provide the site without ads and for free for a limited amount of time / lessons, then ask for a donation every now and then, more often as more the user visits it. There could be a hard limit, e.g., free for 1 year/until level 6, but requiring a donation after that - a bit like the WhatsApp model.
