What I've gathered from other people they say to start off by learning all the characters of the Hiragana chart then move to Katakana.
I second this. Definitely start with hiragana and katakana.
If possible, find some practice charts (http://www.learn-japanese.info/hiragana_practice.gif & http://tranphamquangphuc.files.wordpress.com/2012/09/katakana_practice.gif) and use them for writing practice. Writing helps you commit it to memory better than just typing or flash cards. Though don't discredit flash cards! They are great for learning too.
Learning all the kana before even starting vocabulary on here will help you a lot.
