I'm having a little trouble with the word ひまなじ.

My reading was hi-ma-na-ji but that word doesn't exist, and is incorrect. Can someone please explain in detail how to pronounce it correctly?

Hi, maybe the word is 暇な時 , which is two word 暇な(ひまな)
    means free time(adj), and 時(じ)means hour/hours.

Well, from what I researched, it's pronounced ひまじん

Is there a reason for this?

if that's the case then ひまじん would make a lot of sense, because 暇人(ひまじん) would mean "person with a lot of free time on their hands) it's all about the kanji (暇)ひま(free -time-)/(人)じん(person)

    I see...

Kanji is my greatest weakness at the moment.

I never look at the kanji when I'm practicing unless it shows up with only kanji. Then I'll guess, or try and move on to the next question.

Do you have any advice on how to get better at recognizing Kanji, and practicing it?

I guess my best advice would be to try to get used to them through writing, soon you'll hand will get used to it and you'll remember. People, however, depending on each individual have certain methods in which they learn better or worse. my suggestion is to try all and see what works best for you.
