  you could get by... but of course, any official information/document/registration forms are usually peppered with kanji. so there would be some inconveniences associated with day to day life.

  漢字が大切！you're gonna have a hard time if you don't at least know numbers and cardinal direction kanji but I would just start studying now on them. This isn't going to be something you're gonna be able to learn over night this is gonna take awhile.
