Depending on what your laptops OS is there are different ways to do it. For windows 7 you can change system locale. This will help with displaying kanji. If you want to type Japanese then you will also need keyboard input.

Adding keyboard(Note this is MS IME keyboard, if you want something else you can also download a 3rd party program):
Control Panel -> region and language -> Keyboards and languages -> Change keyboards -> Add -> Japanese
