Hey! In case your phone doesn't have a Japanese keyboard option (like my samsung). You can download an app called "Simeji". It's easy to use. You can easly switch between a westerns keyboard and a Japanese keyboard. It also has a ton of emoticons.

Simeji is indeed very good, especially for emoji. On my Nexus 7, I prefer to use Google Japanese Input.
