    Yeah, but that's in katakana. Does that mean that it doesn't exist in kanji?

    Well, I guess there's nothing stopping you from using 2 kanji with the readings "ma" and "ku" and writing it like that?

    Foreign names aren't usually written in kanji. :/

    ahh ok so foreign names are normally written in katakana

    In chinese you have to use 2 ideograms because it doesn't have a syllabic system.

    Foreign names in Japanese are usually written with Katakana because it is easier. There are still some exceptions to this rule (米国、欧州、and some other less used kanji for some european countries).
