So I've noticed that japanese words don't look like they're made of the letters. Are they completely new symbols instead of combinations of symbols?

Its not like english. Japanese is like a um....picture language????
There is a character, or kana (if the word doesn't have kanji or it's stroke order is too long) that represents a word.

It's also used to differentiate words that sound the same but have different meanings.
