Hello all. I'm studying Japanese mainly for work purposes, but I also like to be able to read Japanese books and play Japanese games (as my long term goals). Do you recommend me to memorize conversational phrases so I can use them at work? Do you think phrases are effective just to make the conversation going? (for example, trying to have a simple introduction conversation in Japanese then continue in English).

Or.. Do you think building the basics from step by step is more important?

Well.... conversational phrases are gonna help you in simple conversations and circumstances, but not so much in complex ones. Introducing yourself in japanese is pretty easy ([name]desu,[name]to iimasu, [name] to moushimasu....)

If you're looking to read books or play games, conversational phrases would only probably take up at most 5% of it, so you would need to go from the basics with that.

Like I said though, conversational phrases are going to help you in those easy situations, but If you wish to go further, then you should also start learning the basics.

Learning the basics is much more important.

If you want to be able to only respond in specific situations, I suppose those phrases would help you. But that isn't much of daily life. Don't skimp out, work your way through the basics.
