ONyomi are ON other kanji (paired with them, compound words, etc). KUNyomi are just one kanji-kun attached with kana to form a word.

but not always, like 花火. 音読み is based on Chinese reading (phonetic) and 訓読み on the Japanese reading (semantic).

Do yourself a favor and don't memorize kanji readings. Just learn the vocabulary and the readings will come naturally. That makes it twice as easy.
