- Yes, this reading of meter/metre was taken from french so we use the カタカナ instead of the ひらがな.May 24, 2015 at 4:39am
- Kanji is possible too? I thought if there is Katakana no Kanji is possible.

I think that the reading was left in カタカナ in order to emphasize the fact that it was borrowed from another language, but it has a kanji that means several other things. Another option is that the kanji was chosen to represent metre for there was no such kanji or word in japanese before and the reading was カタカナ . Regarding usage I have absolutely no idea. I am sure you can find some info on the internet so I will try to find a better explanationMay 24, 2015 at 5:04am
- Oh, it seems to be simply an on reading the represents a sound, and since the sound is foreign no need for ひらがなMay 24, 2015 at 5:07am
- Ok here is the final explanation:

Just searchメートル and there is an explanation.
Thanks a lot for the opportunity to learn something new.May 24, 2015 at 5:12am - WOW!! Thank you for information!! This is really helpfully. I dint know about it. And there even more words like in my example. Mostly I have seen only katakana, but there is also many Kanji too. Now I get it. ありがとうございますMay 24, 2015 at 6:42pm
