It is a test to see your level at the japanese language.

it is my understanding that it is a test by the Japanese government for foreign Japanese speakers.
there are 5 levels 1 being the lowest and 5 the highest proficiency. I think to live, work in japan and/or become a Japanese citizen you have to pass the JLPT at a suitable level.
at least thats what I here .... something like that- nope i got that wrong it goes from 5 being the low grade up to 1 being the high grade. i found the wikapedia page

I'm guessing potential employers might also use it as a standard criteria for foreign vacancy applicants.
