Soo.. I'm practicing vocabulary, and they are asking me for "soap". The answer is written in hiragana, and it is せっけん. When I display the sound, however, I hear something like "ishiken". It happens with many words. Which way am I supposed to pronounce the word? Or does it go either way?

The pronunciation is not too reliable for compound kanji words. It just puts the individual kanji sounds together, which only works sometimes. Kanji pronunciation changes with context.
