  Well, i'm just a beginner like you, but i hope this may help you in your study.
  First, try to learn the japanese writing system: katakana and hiragana.
  Then, learn the basic grammar or the usually used kanjis.
  Next, you can learn either the vocabulary, grammar or kanji.
  
  I use Tae Kim's guide to japanese app for grammar, you can download it on play store or app store.
  
  Each one of us has their own way in studying. Well, that is how I learn Japanese so I hope it helps. :)

  Even though I also have the 'Tae Kim's Guide' app, I'm not quite satisfy with it. I would recommend 'Memrise' which logs katakana and hiragana into your head. Tae Kim's Guide is a bit too exhilarating for me 'at the moment'.
  
  Like kyoshinoFT said, we all have different ways of studying so this isn't any study war, just make sure you find a resource which meets your needs

  I also suggest Tae Kim's guide. On youtube he has many videos, his guide starts from scratch, he also teaches hiragana and katakana.
