How long would it take me to learn Hiragana and Katakana? I'm beginning a diploma soon but I'm beginning after Hiragan and Katakana has been taught, as well as 60 or so kanji.

Depends on you. How many you do, and how much you remember the next day. Personally, took me a month for hiragana, but that was because I was still learning the sounds, and only did 5 a day...Katakana took like 2-3 days....I was like fuck it....I already knew the sounds, just had to learn the characters...

Some people can learn them in one day though, but I was taking my time then...

Few days if you're willingly enough. Kasa's practice on this site helps a lot, anyway you should try writing the table down by scratch few times.

Thanks guys, it sounds like I may be able to do this :D i'll give myself 2 weeks of solid practice and see what i can get done.

Spam the practice quizzes for a bit. Anyway the most important thing is to practice every day

Will do! I've been playing around with afew websites just to get hiragana into my head, then i'm going to move onto katakana. I might start practising writing them once i've memorised the sounds associated with each character and familiarised myself with them :)

I took about a month too. I think taking your time, and actually trying to write them helps with the memorization of the characters. Even now, when I`m writing out Japanese, I forget how to write the odd katakana character. Keep practicing every day.

use flash card apps or anki for pc, its helping me a lot. without it even writing them down 100 times it wouldn't stick.
