I self study a lot and these are my own tips that helpa me,
1) Do your Best, Never give Up!!!
2) Japanese Kanji can look like real life objects, like the Kanji for Tree. Or the Kanji for Mouth, they look similar to the actual physical appearance, and if you know the hiragana or katakana for that word so for Tree it would be Ki, and for mouth it would be Kuchi, you would be able to know how its also pronounced and read in Kanji.
3) Some Japanese Kanji have more then one meaning, I've been self studying for a few years, and personally I've noticed some Kanji can be used in more then one word, and they have more then one way to be pronunciated. It can be really difficult sometimes, so if there's a Kanji with other kanji making a word, and one of the Kanji has been in an other word its possible it won't be pronunciated the same, it'll be an entirely different sound. It could be Hi in one word but Ri in another so becareful and if your ever unsure have a dictionary on hand, but if that's not the case, don't be afraid to make mistakes because you can always learn from them!
4) Japanese Kanji is similar to Chinse characters they're from the same origin, but Japanese Kanji can be a bit different, so if you are learning Chinese as well be careful, a chinese Character may not mean the same thing in Japanese. Some might though, I'm not entirely sure how this whole thing works, they're pronunciated differently, and may mean different things that's something I know for sure.
5) Some Japanese Kanji have stories behind them, a cultural meaning for learning, to make it easier in Japan I only had a few lessons at school but I learned this much, some Kanji are related to festivals and such so you can try to learn Kanji by rounding it up my subjects.
6) Also this is a tip in general for Japanese, you don't have to do it, I was given this tip by my Japanese teacher 6 years ago when I started Japanese that I should speak as much Japanese as possible, I really didn't want to though because my pronunciation wasn't good. I've found though with this site in the confines of my room after seeing the word sometimes hearing it I can copy and try and imitate it, you can hear the word sometimes, which helps, in my opinion, try speaking the word if you can, or any Japanese word, or the kanji when you learn it, that way you can associate it with the kanji and you will have a vocal recognition of it, and a visual recognition. I've found that's its been helping me, not only read Japanese but speak it ^_^
