    I hear the ginki textbook series is really good.

    Yes, definitely Genki is a good textbook, both volumes.i used both. They're good for both read, writing, listening, grammar, and vocabulary. Those books with their accompanying workbooks come with dozens of audio files on a data CD. They gave me a good sturdy foundation in Japanese. Highly recommended.

    Also, Tae Kim's free online Japanese guide and app, imiwa the online dictionary and app, and the Meguro Learning Center (mlcjapanese.co.jp) have been immensely helpful online resources for me as well.
