  start from hiragana and katakana

  Learning what the kanji mean individually first, then how you combine then to make words, you will pick up the prounacion of them along the way. There are a lot of good books about how to memorize kanji.

  Try the book Kanji Made Easy or 250 Essential Japanese Kanji--they are derived from pictographs, even though that is not always immediately obvious.
