Learning any foreign language is a difficult task, especially after your younger formative years where it's easier to learn learn languages. But there are shortcuts here and there for learning Japanese:
- It's arguably the easiest of the East Asian languages for a Western speaker to understand at a basic level. It has limited sounds and a few similarities to Spanish pronunciation
- kana writing is fairly quick and easy to learn
- The learning curve for kanji is steep at first, but it levels out after you learn enough of the common-use characters. The ideographic system makes it easier to memorize new kanji after you get used to the writing.
It's not "easy" at all, but I think it's developed a reputation of being insanely difficult and intimidating, which isn't incredibly accurate.
