- Onyomi is the chinese reading. This reading is usually whats used when combining kanji to make words. Kunyomi is the japanese reading or meaning in japanese. Kunyomi is usually used for stand alone kanji, but there are always exceptions and some words that use more than one kanji will still use the Kunyomi.January 20, 2016 at 1:08am
- Depending on the kanji, there can be up to multiple sounds for each one. Onyomi being the chinese reading or sound, while the kunyomi being the japanese equivalent. Usually in a multiple kanji reading you'll use the chinese reading where as when the kanji's by itself you'll use the Japanese reading(kunyomi).
Ex: Kunyomi- (yume) 夢 or dream,
Onyomi-(mu) as in 悪夢 (akumu) or nightmare.January 20, 2016 at 1:59am
