hello, I am quite new here. Can any of you give me tips on how to learn Kanji. I think it's tough because one kanji has a lot of meanings for example 本, the meaning (book; present; main; origin; true; real; counter for long cylindrical things) . I just learn level 1 chapters 1-3 Kanji. And what is onyomi and kunyomi refer to?Am I have to memorize all the meaning?

Other things is Vocabulary. when you learn vocabulary it has kanji as well
学生
がくせい
gakusei

Do we have to learn kanji first then Vocabulary? or we can go with both by following the level?

Instead learning on yomi and kun yomi by heart if you find it difficult, try to learn the kun yomi of a character if any. ON yomi pronunciation I recommend you to learn it in compound words, not as a separate, meaningless one. Another efficient way of memorising kanji is to learn first and foremost the radicals, because it will help you to have a general overview of a complex character. Usually radicals determine the general meaning of a kanji but this is not a rule for all of them. When you see a kanji for the first time, identify its main radical.

    Hey KuruNeko

you're right, kanji are difficult because they have many meanings and the reading-style changes when kanji combines with another kanji.

Tips to learning kanji? I don't know if I have any good tips... When you're starting out with kanji, start with the basic ones. Practise drawing the kanji -> you'll remember it better. Practise kanji in the test mode so it will "sink in". Here's an interesting video for you by ThatJapaneseManYuta, it shows that writing the more complicated kanji isn't so easy even to the Japanese themselves: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sJNxPRBvRQg

Try to memorize the core meaning of the kanji (for example core meaning of 生 is life) , and the most common onyomi (chinese reading; often used in combinations of two or more kanji) and kunyomi (japanese reading; when there's one kanji). PLEASE REMEMBER that there are exceptions to this. It's sometimes difficult to say, which reading style is correct. I'm just learning for fun, and don't stress too much about the onyomi/kunyomi -readings.

I think it's best to learn both kanji and vocabulary together.

@Acidron, the video that you have found is pretty cool!

@DragonR33UA I know right? Watching that video made me feel so much better, because it shows clearly that learning kanji is about practise (personally, I have a lot to improve upon, when it comes to drawing and recognizing kanji). ThatJapaneseManYuta has good videos on his YouTube -channel (like interviews with Japanese people on the street etc).

@KuruNeko I think that what Signeanu wrote about learning to recognize the radicals is a great tip! (how come I didn't think to say that). I don't know if you use this site as your only studying resource, but here's a link to radicals (unfortunately though, there's no Japanese names for them, but I hope this helps a bit anyways) http://www.tofugu.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/kanji-radicals-cheatsheet.pdf
