In about a year and a half from now I am to become a foreign student in Japan. I still have much to learn with the language itself. I'm a semi-beginner and I would love any advice on how to advance my Japanese more efficiently.

no secret really, immersion would be the best that you can do to improve :)
I got a japanese 3ds for my birthday last year and it's really helpful. My japanese improved dramatically after getting it :D
The only downside would probably be the cost, I got mine for a little less than £200 with animal crossing, customs and delivery.

If you go the 3ds route I would also suggest picking up 漢字そのまま (Kanjisonomama) It is a good dictionary for the DS and also works on the 3DS. Here is a review if you need one. http://learn-japanese-ds.blogspot.jp/search/label/kanjisonomama

go through a manga or book and look up every word you don't know. Use tae kim's grammar guide.- I live in the middle of no where. I wish.

- Depends on what you want to do but if you want a Japanese study site I would recommend Renshuu.org. You can study vocabulary there but I mainly use it for studying grammar points. The forums also are very active which means if you have a question it tends to get answered within a day. It is free for about 80% of the site but there are different payment plans if you wish to do grammar tests or listening tests.
