Hiragana is the most basic of the Japanese alphabets. Katakana is used mainly for foreign words, like English ones, and then Kanji is used to combine and put certain hiragana sounds into a context when written I think, since the sounds would be the same as if it was in another context. Sometimes you might even see Furigana above the Kanji, but even those are essentially hiragana as well.
