if it stand alone it will be a rice
but when it stand with other kanji it will be change.
same as 中 naka or center/middle. but when it stand with 国 country it will be china.
some of them is kinda like old language.
like France used to be written in kanji and not katakana.

Ateji is where kanji is used to spell words (mostly, but not exclusively, foreign words), without regard for the meaning inherent in other uses of kanji. Basically, kanji instead of katakana.
So the "rice" meaning in 米 is disregarded when you see it used in reference to America. They chose 米 for America because 亜 is the shorthand for Asia, from the ateji spelling, 亜細亜.April 4, 2016 at 3:42pm - thank you so much
