I find it's more effective to learn actual kanji compounds and words, rather than the onyomi and kunyomi. Like instead of knowing that 日 reads as ひ、び、or にち and not knowing which compounds use which, just learning 日、数日、日本、五日、and 日常 and knowing how to pronounce the individual words and knowing what they mean (especially with 一日、二日 and so on since they totally don't sound like にち or ひ)
