Many U sounds are dropped in words, such as desu being pronounced des, masu being pronounced mas and suki being pronounced ski. However, not every U is dropped in every word, but it is very common.

It doesn't need to silenced, but it is common, and I have only heard it with su.

It's not silenced, it's just "weak". Some people usually learn Japanese and completely cut the "u" from pronunciation saying things as "dess" or "mass" and it is completely wrong. If you speak to Japanese people, watch anime, dorama or listen to music, you'll understand that the "u" has a weak pronunciation principally on the ending of a word, but it don't have to be completely silenced. Keep it in mind to don't adquire bad habits.
