I recommend starting with grammar first. Tae Kim's grammar guide is really good and most importantly, free:

Tae Kim's guide starts by explaining the writing system, so start with that. Learn hiragana and katakana as soon as posible and try to eliminate rōmaji and forget about their existence (rōmaji are counterproductive), then start with kanji. Don't leave the kanji for later, since it's the biggest hurdle it's best to take it on as early as possible while you're still motivated.
