こんいにちは！I'm learning Japanese on my own, and had some trouble finding structure in my self learning. This site is great. Excellent starting point, and I can do it in my own pace. Since I don't have any Japanese friends I can talk to, I watch some TV shows to surround myself with the language.
Currently I'm watching Good Morning Call and Atelier. To me, it sounds like they have a very "simple" language, ie. not too fast, well articulated, perfect for someone like me who needs to pick up on words. Any other tips? I watch anime as well, but that is usually too energetic/chaotic for me in terms on picking up on words.

If you can get those shows with subtitles in Japanese, then it would be great. If not, you can also just write down the words you hear and look them up in an online dictionary, that way you can practice vocabulary with context.
I recommend getting some Japanese friends! HelloTalk is probably the best app out there for that. Using a word you've just learned in a real conversation does wonders for helping it stick. Also, listen to Japanese podcasts so you can hear real Japanese, rather than a scripted conversation. :) It'll better prepare you for talking to people. I have been learning for 2 months and I have all hirigana and katakana over 250 words in my vocabulary, 120 or so kanji characters, and can speak almost proper grammar and can speak mostly fluently- I have only been using this site for 2 hours though ;P
P.s. Sorry to those who see as I am bragging I just am happy I am improving and I have been learning at a very quick pace and fairly often you guys are all just as great and I hope you all learn greatly!- So it just matters to how quick you are for most people it is 2 years but me I can say it will probably maybe 8 months! Hope this was helpful!
