When you read the Kunyomi is it the kanji alone? When you read the Onyomi is the kanji with another kanji character? How can I tell the difference???

Kunyomi is normally the kanji either with no other characters, or with kana characters, onyomi with other kanji, from what I've heard. There are probably exceptions, though.
