It depends on the person (and many other factors), but here is an estimation for studying for the Japense Language Proficiency Test: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese-Language_Proficiency_Test#Estimated_study_time. Another estimation for reading manga, talking about politics, watching raw anime, etc: http://japaneselevelup.com/how-long-does-it-take-to-learn-japanese/.

You have found pretty good articles! It is very interesting to read. I would add also it depends how people learn the language.

    1) PRIVATE teacher or selfstudying.
    2) Good school.
    3) How it works with Kanji-shock.
    4) Right system for studying.
    5) Time and wish and motivation.

Also I do not agree with the second article. Fluent in Reading Manga: 2 – 2.5 years.

I don't really think that this is possible. Because you know, they use different kind of Kanji, and sometimes it is pretty complicated. Not all Kanji are possible to get to know even after N1!!! But you never know what it can be there. Regular Japanese know more Kanji than people can get after N1. And I am not talking about people with N2, N3, N4.

I think it would be more like after 2-2,5 years it will be possible to get the major Idea and understand what they want to say, but fluent means (What I understand) pretty easy read and understand nearly 99%.

I was kind of a heavy learner and after 3 years I could be able to understand nearly all N5, N4 and N3 Kanji. But even after so many years I still don't understand many words and nearly everything is so complicated.

    "3~4 years to Japanese fluency.
    Is this true?
Who knows? It could be. Maybe. Probably not."

I like how he wrote. That is a very good words.

I've been learning Japanese for four years and still am half way through N5 level. I don't mean to scare you, if you're consistent you'll know a lot more than me in a year. I was never consistent with my learning so I learned barely anything. It depends on how consistent you can be, and if you're willing to apply you're learning.
