Pompey Magnus (the "Great") was a brave soldier, competent commander, an adroit and shrewd politician who possessed overweening ambition - even if, at rare intervals, showing a lack of resolve to act decisively - he ruthlessly manipulated his way to high office and power. Pompey was Sulla's protege. Given extraordinary commands, he formed the First Triumvirate with Caesar and Crassus, to secure their political gains and thwart the hostile opposition of the Senate.
