In 1972 the NY Subway map was designed by Italian designer Massimo Vignelli. Most agree that the map was a work of art, it actually hangs in the Museum of Modern Art. However, it wasn't geographically correct, making it hard to navigate the city. The map was redesigned in 1979. The New York City Transit Authority Graphics Standards Manual contains scans of Massimo Vignelli and Bob Noorda's (Unimark) modernist masterpiece. The manual describes the design and construction for the iconic NYC subway signs that we still see and use today, but above all it's a beautiful and important piece of design history.
