Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range #227, a Class M-3 2-8-8-4 "Yellowstone"_type locomotive built by Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1941. Designed to haul iron ore from the mines where it was drawn to the Great Lakes, the engine, like the others in its class, performed well beyond expectations. Though most of the M-3 (and the later M-4) Class engines were scrapped, #227 is on display at the Lake Superior Railroad Museum in Duluth, MN, being the best-preserved example of the "Yellowstone" type engine.
