Every Live-Action Anime Remake Currently In DeveopmentNow that Ghost in the Shell has hit theaters, let's take a look at the other live-action remakes Hollywood currently has in the works.Akira is widely considered to be one of the greatest anime films ever made, so it's no surprise that Warner Bros. been trying for years to craft a live-action version. Many writers and directors have been attached to the project at one point or another, but Akira has remained stuck in development hell for 15 years now. Luckily, there's been some momentum recently, with Get Out director Jordan Peele reportedly being courted by Warners.Adapting Yukito Kishiro's Battle Angel Alita has been a long-time goal for James Cameron. Cameron was attached to direct the film in the early 2000's, though with his ongoing commitment to the Avatar sequels he's now serving as producer. Instead, Robert Rodriguez (Planet Terror) is directing a screenplay by Laeta Kalogridis (Shutter Island), with Rosa Salazar starring as the titular cybernetic assassin. The film is currently slated to hit theaters in July 2018.The original Bleach anime had an incredibly long run by normal anime standards, lasting from 2004 to 2012. Back in 2010 it was announced that Peter Segal and Michael Ewing were producing a live-action adaptation for Warner Bros. We haven't heard any updates about the duo's involvement since 2012, but there is a Bleach movie hitting Japanese theaters in 2018 (directed by Shinsuke Sato and starring Sōta Fukushi). We're not sure if the Sega/Ewing project morphed into the current one or if WB might still be planning a separate American adaptation, but fans can look forward to at least one Bleach movie in the near future. While not necessarily a smash hit in the US, sci-fi spaghetti western Cobra the Animation found a huge following in France during the 1980s. French director Alexandre Aja optioned the franchise in 2010, citing a lifelong ambition to film an adaptation. Unfortunately, progress on the Cobra movie has been sluggish ever since, with Aja admitting that acquiring necessary funding has been an uphill battle. But despite that, Aja said in 2016 that pre-production "is well advanced" and that his design team has been busy fleshing out the universe.Death Note is shaping up to be the next high-profile anime remake of 2017, with an English language film hitting Netflix in August 2017. Blair Witch director Adam Wingard is helming this adaptation, with Nat Wolff starring as Light Turner, a high schooler who acquires a notebook with the power to kill anyone whose name is written inside. Keith Stanfield co-stars as Light's brilliant nemesis, L, while Willem Dafoe will voice L's demonic partner, Ryuk. Similar to Ghost in the Shell, Death Note has attracted controversy due to perceived whitewashing of the cast. In response, the producers issued a statement that said, "The talent and diversity represented in our cast, writing, and producing teams reflect our belief in staying true to the story’s concept of moral relevance — a universal theme that knows no racial boundaries.”Warner Bros. and OXYBOT Inc. have partnered on a live-action remake of Fullmetal Alchemist, a story about two brothers seeking the Philosopher's Stone to restore their mechanically altered bodies. The film features a full Japanese cast despite the European fantasy setting. Fumihiko Sori (Ping Pong) is directing the film, with Ryosuke Yamada, Tsubasa Honda and Dean Fujioka starring. The film is currently scheduled for release in Japan in December 2017.Classic samurai saga Lone Wolf and Cub is no stranger to the live-action realm, spawning a wealth of theatrical movies and TV projects in Japan. And there have been rumblings of a Hollywood reboot of the franchise. As of 2010, Justin Lin was attached to direct the film, though he seems to have moved on. In 2016, it was announced that Ghost in the Shell producer Steven Paul had acquired the rights to the film, which will be called Lone Wolf and Cub: Final Conflict. There have been conflicting reports about whether novel series-turned-manga-turned-anime trilogy Mardock Scramble is destined for Hollywood. In 2012 (shortly before the release of the final anime film) it was announced that Shoot 'Em Up director Michael Davis will write and direct the adaptation. However, Hayakawa Publishing editor Yoshihiro Shiozawa later revealed that rights negotiations are still ongoing, and we've heard no updates since then.Like Bleach, Naruto is simply too massive and too popular a franchise not to get the Hollywood treatment sooner or later. And it may well be sooner at this point. Lionsgate is pushing forward with the adaptation, with Avi Arad producing and Michael Gracey (The Greatest Showman) directing. While some fans of this epic ninja saga are afraid of more Hollywood whitewashing, the fact that creator Masashi Kishimoto is involved with the adaptation is being taken as a good sign. Robotech was basically a gateway drug for many nascent anime fans in the '80s, and perhaps the same will be true when the series makes the jump to the big screen. The project was originally in development at Warners, but eventually shifted over to Sony in 2015. Tobey Maguire is producing the film and may also star. Leonardo DiCaprio is also rumored to play a major role. Furious 7 director James Wan has been tapped to direct, though his commitment to Aquaman means that fans may have to wait a few more years for Robotech to finally materialize.Based on the Space Battleship Yamato series, Star Blazers was among the first episodic anime shows to find a significant audience in the US. It's also one of the first to gain any real Hollywood traction. Disney optioned the rights in the mid-'90s, and a screenplay by writer Tab Murphy leaked onto the Internet a few years later. However, the project eventually stalled after a management upheaval. Now the rights are currently held by David Ellison's Skydance Productions, with Christopher McQuarrie attached to write, produce and direct. At one point, Japanese newspaper Sports Nippon reported that a 2017-2018 release window was being sought, though at this point that seems unlikely. While director Fumihiko Sori is helming the live-action Fullmetal Alchemist movie, one of his own animated works is due to receive a remake. This 2007 CG animated movie about a futuristic Japan isolated from the rest of the world has been optioned by Universal Pictures. Writer Evan Spiliotopoulos (2014's Hercules) is currently penning the screenplay, while Beau Flynn and Tripp Vinson have signed on as producers.Voltron is currently undergoing a successful renaissance thanks to Netflix and DreamWorks Animation's Voltron: Legendary Defender, but a live-action remake is also in the cards. Rumors of a remake have actually been tossed about since 2005 or so, but there's been new progress since Universal acquired the rights after purchasing DreamWorks. Deadline recently reported that X-Men writer David Hayter is penning the screenplay, with Universal apparently hoping to tap into the same audience fueling the massively successful Transformers franchise. We're considering Cowboy Bebop more of an honorable mention at this point, as we're not convinced this long-dormant project will ever actually see the light of day. News first broke in 2008 that 20th Century Fox was pursuing an adaptation, with Keanu Reeves set to star as suave bounty hunter Spike Spiegel and several key players from the anime involved. Unfortunately, there's been little progress since then, with the budget apparently being a major hurdle. In 2014, Cowboy Bebop anime director Shinichiro Watanabe said, "Apparently the project hasn't come to a stop but I don't know how it's going to progress from here on." Based on recent comments, Reeves also seems to have moved on.
