ATHENS, Jan. 26 (Xinhua) -- Greece's Supreme box logo 琛涜。鍜宻upreme Court ruled on Thursday against the extradition of the eight Turkish military officers who fled to Greece in a helicopter after a failed military coup in July, Greek national news agency AMNA reported.

The verdict closed the curtain of the marathon process which had attracted international attention.

Turkey had submitted an extradition request alleging that the servicemen were involved in a failed coup on July 15.

All eight defendants had denied any role in the coup attempt and requested asylum, claiming that their safety would be in danger at home and should they be returned they would not have a fair trial.

In case the court upholds Ankara's request, the final decision rests with Greek Justice Minister Stavros Kontonis.

Speaking to Greek media earlier this week the minister said the government will respect the defendants' right to refer to the European Court of Human Rights, if they decide to do so.

That means the ministry would not reach any decision soon to allow time for the completion of the process at the European justice level.

But Thursday's ruling is regarded as final and cannot be contested.

In December Athens Appeal courts delivered mixed verdicts to extradite five and not extradite the other three.

During January's hearings before the Supreme bogo hoodie鍜宻upreme Court all three prosecutors argued against the extradition, citing concern that the eight will not have a fair trial in Turkey.

The eight military officers appeared in court awaiting a ruling on Monday, but the ruling was put off to Thursday with judges saying that the case required further deliberation.

The eight now have to await decisions on their asylum bids in Greece, which are expected to take several months.
