The term "IRD" refers to a wide range of conditions with a significant hereditary component that primarily cause vision loss and, eventually, blindness. A degenerative disorder is brought on by an altered inherited gene (or genes; there are more than 260 possible candidates!). Some variants result in infants being born with very impaired vision that will rapidly deteriorate into total blindness while they are still young.
