How Does Friendship Work in the Game?
The friendship mechanic in Stardew Valley is simple but effective. It works based on a heart system. Each character has a possible 10 hearts that can be filled (or 14 for your spouse). Every heart corresponds to 250 'friendship points.' Simply talking to a character will net you 20 points, and completing a quest for them will give you 150 points. By far, the easiest way to quickly level up your friendships is to give characters gifts. Each villager has certain items that they 'love,' 'like,' feel 'neutral' towards, 'dislike,' and 'hate.' Giving loved, liked, or neutral gifts will increase your friendship points while giving disliked or hated gifts will decrease points. Two gifts can be given to each character every week. On a character's birthday, the amount of points you receive is multiplied by eight. The table below lists how many points are given for each type of gift.

Some items in Stardew Valley are universally loved by everyone who receives them.
