English Public
Semiconductors are like tiny components in things we use every day, such as phones, computers, cars and robots. The global market for such components is currently worth over USD 530 billion. Over the next decade, its size is expected to double.
The semiconductor industry is characterised by the presence of powerful players at every level of the supply chain. They are not particularly concentrated in one region. For example, the US dominates in chip design and logic chips. South Korea is prominent in memory chips in East Asia, while Japan leads in materials and wafer manufacturing. There are a limited number of players in the semiconductor industry, but different winners at each stage. It is therefore an interdependent industry.
