I knew my Japanese was lacking, but I didn't realise until now how bad it really is. I failed to read the menu at an Okonomiyakiya so I had to go to Sukiyaki to get something to eat. Talk about motivation to learn harder!

- Haha. So you're in Japan right now? Where abouts?
Did you mean Sukiya (すき家). You definitely missed out if you went there instead of an お好み焼き屋.
お好み焼き was easily one of my favourite things I ate in Japan. That's definitely good motivation! :D I first tried it when I went to お好み村 in 広島市. Highly recommend visiting this place if you get the opportunity. ^^

I'm in 東京都 for another 10 days, so still plenty of chances. The next attempt still didn't get me any お好み焼き, instead I had to evade some rather sketchy guys. At least this time I ended up in a rather pleasant eatery. And カツ丼 of rather easy to read.
お好み村 Is on my list of places to visit in Japan, haha! I guess I'll have to come here another time then ;-)September 14, 2017 at 1:40pm - I spent my first week of the four weeks I was in Japan mostly just eating コンビニ food. I kept chickening out on going to eating places on my own. ^^;
However, there were some awesome people I met in that first week who then invited me to go eat with them: Beeant (!!!), Koukyoshi (another user on here who has been living in Japan for a few years), two friendly Japanese guys (who were staying at the same hostel I stayed for my first few nights in Japan), and a random non-native Japanese lady (who had missed the bus I'd just gotten off on my way from the airport to the hostel).
I had gone to Japan completely on my own, but I was very lucky that, within my first week of being there, so many kind people took me along with them to go eat at different places. I was in Tokyo for that first week, then I went to Hiroshima for two days straight afterwards. If it hadn't been for those people I just mentioned, then I would almost certainly still have been eating コンビニ food マクドナルド instead when I was in Hiroshima. I doubt I would've been brave enough to eat at お好み村 at that point in my trip—I would have missed out on this experience and many others. So I'm very thankful to all those people. ^^
I hope you get plenty more good opportunities and are able to experience all the things you want within the remaining time of your trip. (Also hope the weather won't be too bad this weekend..)September 15, 2017 at 9:08am - Enjoy your stay in Japan!
I'm living in Hyogo-ken. If you were around here I could show you some nice places.September 15, 2017 at 2:45pm - Thank you for your kind offer, wigglysquire, I might come around on my next trip then. I am sure there is so much more to see than only Kobe.
Mog, thank you for sharing your stories. If there's one thing I always seem to get in abundance here then it's good food (yes, I managed to get my Hiroshima style お好み焼, and it went well with a つめたくて美味しい生ビール). If I understood the Japanese 天気予報 correctly this is the remainder of a 台風 - so yes, I hope the rain isn't too bad either!September 16, 2017 at 8:52am
