Haven't been here for four months. Coming back is so nostalgic! Over 2500 items in Oblivion though....
I want to share some language throughts.
I am learning Chinese since August and I had a blast with hanzi system. Many characters are the same, but I have to relearn the pronunciation. It's uplifting.
I also have to relearn the strokes, since they are different. For example for 母.
I guess knowing Japanese can help with any hieroglyphic language.

Grammar is different in many aspects, but easy as for the level I am on(beginner). Some things are the same or simular.
Today is Sunday in Japanese: 今日 は 日曜日
Chinese: 今天 是 星期天
There are also lots of new characters that I don't know that are not in Japanese and that look more difficult than average Japanesy ones. But what helps me is the hieroglyphic mindset of the Japanese language. I already know that hanzi has a sound and a meaning, like a word, so I stick to that.

I think it's funny, that Japanese now has some kanji that are only in Traditional Chinese, but are no longer present in Simplified Chinese. Like 陸 and 歴.

Overall it's fun. I am trying to advance in Japanese simultaneously. I just had a really good offer for Chinese and I accepted it :3
That's that, kinda.

I wonder how Japanese looks like for Chinese speakers. I was wondering if Chinese have kind of similar experience as I have with Polish and Bulgarian, being a native Russian speaker. When reading the texts in this languages there are many things that I don't understand. Some things sound like archaic Russian, sometimes it's like gibberish Russian and sometimes words sound really funny.
I was wondering about archaic part, since Japanese has some kanji that are not in Simplified Chinese.

Not to mention that Japanese also have their own/invented kanji which aren't present at all in original hanzi, and vice versa (e.g., hanzi not adapted to kanji). I have a slight interest in Chinese since I grew up in a city where people of mainly Chinese descent still use the language for business (and more perhaps for heritage preservation) purposes.

And we also have Chinese influences in our culture and food as well--think of siopao/baozi, siomai/shumai, tikoy, and Chinese New Year. Our calendars have Chinese characters and businessmen usually consult fengshui experts for good luck and steady income.

Well, being descendants of ancient Chinese immigrants and thousands of years of trade all play into those fun things.

    Yea, also that!
Interesting. Maybe some Chinese is already engraved into your head :D

It's amazing how differently the cultures immerse into on another. With the help of history of course
