  I can do it with Firefox, but the comments are bugged. It's a lot better than Chrome which seems to be absolutely horrid for this site. And, well, IE... not a chance of me using that.

  I only use chrome and the site works fine for me
  
  I can change my profile picture fine on chrome as well. And you don't have to have a gravatar to change your picture.

  You can change it. It defaults to gravatar. I just changed my picture, but it still shows me the old own. My guess is that chrome caches the pic and you see the old one, while in fact it has changed. Clean the cache if you really want to, or just wait some time, it's gonna get updated

  1) How far do you get? When you click the 'Edit profile picture' link, does nothing happen at all?
  
  2) '今日学校が閉まる。' seems to me more like 'Today the school closes'. I think to say the school is currently in a closed state, you'd have to change 閉まる to 閉まっている, I think.
  
  任命する seems to be a strange term to use in this sentence, and it would at least need to be put in past tense form. I'm not sure 任命した can even mean 'assigned'? It seems it's often used to say 'appointed' (i.e. someone getting appointed to a new position within a company). If you want a verb phrase that means assigned, then I think 割り当てる【わりあてる】could be used instead, however, 宿題を出した ('handed out homework') might be better anyway?
  
  This is my attempt at writing that sentence, although it should probably be written differently depending on context:
  
  学校は今日は閉まっている。せんせいは子供たちに宿題を割り当てた。

  I think it would be just simpler to use せんせいが生徒たちに課題を上げました。But I know there is an unbelievable temptation to use the same words as English, no matter how out of place a dictionary-defined word might be in that usage, haha.

  上げました was the first alternative that I had thought of, but I wasn't sure about whether it would be used for a teacher to pupil direction of giving (higher to lower?). It is probably actually fine, but I went with what seemed safer to me: 出した, which I think can mean something like 'gave out'.
  
  Other things I thought of were using 'receive' instead of 'give', or using passive verb form 'given by'. But idk, maybe this situation doesn't even need a higher to lower language usage in the first place anyway?

  You are right about the higher status, haha....checking up on a few things, 与える (あたえる） is the perfect verb here, giving down, not to mention that "to assign" is one of the definitions.

  I checked up 上げる in a decent grammar book, and it's fine the way you used it. One of the examples for 上げる is pretty much what was wanted anyway:
  
  '先生は学生に鉛筆を上げました。 = The teacher gave the student a pencil.'
